Tips and Remedies for a Healthy Scalp
- Hydration is key
Just as we prioritise keeping our skin hydrated, our scalp also deserves some TLC. With the shifting weather, it’s common for our scalp to experience dryness, irritation, or itchiness. Staying adequately hydrated not only benefits your overall health but also prevents your scalp from feeling parched. It’s advisable to aim for a daily intake of at least 2 litres of water. I’ve personally embraced this practice, and it truly works wonders for both your skin and scalp. I wholeheartedly believe in the magic of water!
- Wash Days: Less is More
Wash days are important, but don’t overdo it. Washing your hair excessively can harm your scalp’s natural oils and overall health. These oils, called sebum, serve vital roles like moisturising, protecting, and distributing nutrients for overall healthy hair. Over-washing strips away sebum, leading to a dry, itchy scalp. Moreover, excessive washing weakens hair, making it prone to damage. To maintain balance, it’s generally best to wash your hair every other week, or as needed, with a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner. This preserves your scalp’s oils while keeping your hair clean.
3. Heat styling – the right way.
I understand that many hairstyles involve some level of direct heat like blowdrying or curling, but excessive heat can seriously dehydrate your scalp. My recommendation is to limit the use of heating tools to a maximum of once a week. Additionally, consider switching to an ionic blowdryer, as it helps retain moisture in both your hair and scalp. When it comes to silk presses or straightening, opt for hair straighteners with nano technology to prevent your hair and scalp from becoming overly dry. The TAUPE TOOLS Silk Press Straightener offers this benefit, and the best part is that it requires only one pass, eliminating the need for repeatedly going over your hair with the straighteners, which we all know isn’t ideal.
4. Oils – the good and bad
While oils have the potential to soothe and nourish the scalp, I don’t always advocate for their use due to the potential for scalp clogging. As mentioned earlier, your scalp naturally produces oils over time, and while I acknowledge that oils can provide temporary relief from flakiness and itchiness, excessive use may not be the most beneficial approach. Instead, I recommend opting for specialised scalp treatments, which can be scheduled at the salon. These treatments are carefully formulated and laboratory-tested to effectively address issues like dandruff and dry scalp without the risk of excess oil buildup. If you insist on using oils, then you might as well use one that provides more benefits than just soothing the scalp. I highly recommend trying out MEENO Hair Growth Oil, a plant-based oil known for its hair growth benefits. Our clients have consistently shared positive feedback about it, and that’s precisely why we offer it for retail at our salon.
5. When all else fails…..
Persistent dryness of the scalp can be quite frustrating and uncomfortable. In such cases, there is absolutely nothing wrong with seeking the expertise of a professional who can provide targeted solutions. I strongly recommend considering two options:
Firstly, consulting with a dermatologist is an excellent choice. Dermatologists specialise in diagnosing and treating a wide range of skin and scalp conditions. They can conduct a thorough evaluation of your scalp, identify any underlying issues, and recommend appropriate medical treatments or prescription products if necessary. This route ensures that you receive expert care tailored to your specific scalp concerns.
Alternatively, you can opt to book an appointment with us at TAUPE. Our team is well-versed in understanding various scalp types and conditions. During your consultation, we’ll assess the condition of your scalp, discuss your specific concerns, and provide personalised recommendations and solutions. Whether it’s a specialised treatment, a change in haircare routine, or product suggestions, our goal is to address your unique needs and help you achieve a healthy, moisturised scalp. Remember, seeking professional help is a proactive step toward resolving persistent dryness and ensuring your scalp’s optimal health and comfort.
Bonus Tip: It’s easier said than done, but guess what? Stress can also impact the health of your scalp! Incorporating stress-relief practices into your routine, such as yoga, meditation, or even taking a break from electronic devices, can make a significant difference. Not only will your scalp benefit from these measures, but your overall well-being and peace of mind will also see positive effects.
